DESCRIPTION

Two of the most influential documentaries in the history of filmmaking together on this cassette. Both from director Pare Lorentz and narrated by Thomas Chalmers:

  • The River (1937) - This Depression-era documentary explains the importance of the Mississippi River, detailing the destruction of the environment in the name of progress--especially farming and lumbering methods which caused massive erosion and vast amounts of top soil to be washed down the river into the Gulf of Mexico. The film pays special attention to the impact of these practices on poor farmers. It ends with on an optimistic note with hope that the TVA, "modern" farming technology and dams will improve the plight of the farmers--and the land.

  • The Plow that Broke the Plains (1936) - Soil erosion and the resulting dust bowl conditions during the depression are the topics of this beautifully filmed documentary.
