1970 - No words can aptly describe the films of Andy Milligan, which generally cause you to gag on your sandwich or leave you pondering whether you should laugh out loud or vomit in the fishbowl. Guru is an all time classic! Guru, the Mad Monk is a Z-film landmark. A crazed priest during the middle ages runs a weird church for lost souls. He barbarically executes and tortures pitiful villagers, aided by his vampiress, Olga, and an ugly hunchback. The execution scenes are ludicrous and call to mind the primitive gore of 2000 MANIACS. Watch the villager who's dragged up to the chopping block in tan Levis! When the ax raises, see him lift his head out of the way. Flanagan, as Guru, isn't bad considering the inane dialogue he's stuck with. The one-eyed hunchback looks like someone squashed silly putty over one eye. Then, there's Olga, played by Webb. This may be the worst "female vampire" portrayal, ever. Ever! Yet, somehow her natural crudeness and the repulsiveness of her features seem to fit the surreal badness of this outlandish film. A must. Color, 35mm.
