The man they called 'Mr. Television' had been on radio and in a few films before he hit TV. He was not a complete unknown. He really started to shine when he was given a bit of freedom as host of 'Texaco Star Theater' and became a sensation with the shows that more and more revovled around him and his humor, than the solid cast and guests. He was in the top of the Tuesday night ratings for almost two entire decades. The comedy and variety show aired from September 2, 1948 to June 9, 1953 on NBC.
