DESCRIPTION
Two comedy variety shows from stars of legendary status. - The Jimmy Durante Show was based on the stories which revolved around The Club Durante, and it's owner. Jimmy interviewed and auditioned talent, dealt with the headaches that accompany an endevor like a club and the people involved. Regulars on the show were Eddie Jackson, Jules Buffano, Jack Roth, The Durante Girls, and The Roy Bargy Orchestra. Jimmy often performed in the night club himself, ending the shows as he walked off stage through a series of spotligts and delivering his famous line "And Goodnight, Mrs. Calabash, Where ever you are." The show ran from October 2, 1954 to June 23, 1956 on NBC.
- The Spike Jones Show If you like music, or if you like to laugh, you owe it to yourself to expose yourself to Spike Jones. Funny isn't a strong enough word to describe the show. Spike, along with his wife, singer Helen Grayco, and a merry band of seeming misfits, idiots, and musicians go around playing music of all types--on cowbells, foghorns, trashcans, slide whistles, and anything else that can be pressed into service as a makeshift musical instrument. No matter what type of music, Spike and his City Slicker Band could reduce it to mayhem. The series included outrageous musical numbers by Spike and Band, serious songs played straight for Helen, who could really sing, appeances by guest stars, comedy skits, and more. Maybe the feeling is best summed up by the title of one of Spikes Album titles. "Dinner Music for People Who Aren't Very Hungry". This comedy variety show aired from January 2, 1954 to September 25, 1961.
