This volume contains two pilots:
- The Joe E. Brown Show (Unsold pilot – July 17, 1956) Originally aired as ‘Country Store’ on General Electric Summer Originals. The Big Mouth plays a widower with two kids, and owner of Joe's General Store in the small town of Greendale. Joe spends much of his time on the front porch talking to Wilbur, an unseen, unheard traveling salesman who visits each week. Joe goes to bat for a newcomer in town, a foreigner who comes up against prejudice.
- Operation ESP (Unsold pilot - produced in the early 1950s) Created by, written by and starring Sheldon Leonard. Also stars Robert Sweeney. Harris and Miller, riding the rails, are arrested as delinquents, and when they come before the judge they tell a strange story. They had met a man with ESP who helped them make money betting with his power.
"A 'pilot' is a film made by a producer who wants to pitch the idea for a TV series to the networks. If the network likes the pilot, or if they air the pilot and it gets good response, the producer gets a deal to make more episodes based on the pilot... usually 13 or 26, which will then be aired. If those do well in the ratings the network will request more episodes for a series. Many pilots get made every year, some make it to the air - most don't. We have included first episodes of series in this category, even though they're technically not pilots."
