Four famous films with drug themes.

  • The Mystery of the Leaping Fish (1916 - Silent - B&W) Directed by John Emerson - Starring Douglas Fairbanks Sr., Bessie Love, Alma Rubens, Allan Sears, Charles Stevens, Tom Wilson - Coke Ennyday (Fairbanks Sr.) is a scientific detective whose day consists of periods for sleeping, eating, doping and drinking. He uses drugs (kept in a bandolier of hypodermics) to help in every situation he encounters--to boost his energy or to knock out the bad guys. While helping the police, he discovers a cache of opium (which he eagerly samples) being smuggled with "leaping fish" and somehow related to a blackmail plot involving a mysterious man and a girl known as 'The Fish Blower,' whom Coke must find and free. This parody of Sherlock Holmes is one of those delightfully weird little silent films that you occasionally stumble upon. You know, the kind you watch often--usually with your jaw agape.

  • Sinister Harvest (1930 - 9 Minutes - Silent with Voice Over - B&W) Directed by Dwain Esper - This early anti-drug propaganda film tries to look as if it were shot in Egypt while documenting the self-destructive habits of opium addicts. The interiors of drug dens are explored and, at the conclusion the film, an addict is shown collapsing on a sand dune as the booming voice of the narrator announces the addict has perished.

  • The Death Weed (1920 - Silent)

  • The Pusher (1955)
