1959 - The Risk isn’t a good movie, it’s a great movie. It’s a fine blend of medical science fiction and espionage. Cushing is the head of a research lab that has created a new super virus that cures bubonic plague. Unfortunately, the government feels it might also be used as a horrible germ-warfare weapon. Cushing and his staff are outraged when British Intelligence forbids them to publish their work. Will they publish anyway, or give it to another government? This great thriller keeps you guessing to the end. There are many fine performances, too. Walters is great as the bumbling, yet sly head of British Intelligence; Pleasance is the seedy go-between who lures scientist Britton into handing over the secrets of the virus to another power; and Bannen is exceptional as the paraplegic (no arms) who arranges the exchange. A very memorable, under-appreciated film. Highly recommended. From 16mm.
